KITTERY, Maine — R.W. Traip Academy Principal Eric Waddell will receive the Maine Music Educators Association’s Administrator of the Year Award on Thursday in Orono.
The award, according to the MMEA, “recognizes administrative support for music education” for “individuals who have demonstrated active, ongoing support for a balanced music program.”
Traip Academy music and band teacher, Lonnie Wescott, nominated Waddell for the award. At the School Committee meeting on Tuesday, Wescott read his nomination letter to the board, who were surprised to learn that Waddell had won the statewide award.
Wescott said Waddell’s commitment to the arts at the school has helped the programs flourish.
“Our theater program has become a vibrant component of our school community in no small part due to Eric’s involvement, encouragement, expertise, advice and support,” he said, noting the theater programs have won awards the past three years.
In addition, the band program has grown to 45 out of a school population of 280, and next year the number is projected to be over 60, he said. With the growth of band and choral members, Waddell helped find resources for a jazz band director as well as for a choral director who will begin next year, he said.
Waddell will receive the award during the MMEA’s annual conference held at the University of Maine in Orono.
